Progress Update

A progress update is a regular status report on Key Result progress, typically given as part of weekly check-ins.

Progress updates are the operational backbone of OKR tracking. They ensure that Key Result progress is continuously captured and transparently communicated.

A good progress update contains three elements: the current value of the Key Result, a confidence level (On Track / At Risk / Off Track), and a brief qualitative assessment. This way, all stakeholders know not just where the Key Result stands, but also how realistic goal achievement is.

The frequency of progress updates varies by organization. Weekly updates have become established as best practice: frequent enough to course-correct in time, but not so frequent that they feel like bureaucratic overhead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should progress updates be made?

Weekly is the standard recommendation. This enables timely detection of deviations without burdening teams with too-frequent updates. Some companies also use biweekly cycles.

What belongs in a good progress update?

1) Current value of the Key Result, 2) Confidence level (On Track/At Risk/Off Track), 3) Brief explanation of progress or blockers, 4) Planned next steps. An update should take 2-3 minutes.

Who is responsible for progress updates?

Every team member who is (co-)responsible for a Key Result. In practice, an OKR owner often coordinates updates and ensures all Key Results are regularly updated.

What to do when a Key Result is 'Off Track'?

An off-track status is a signal for action, not panic. Analyze the causes, discuss possible countermeasures with the team, and adjust the approach. The Key Result may need to be recalibrated.
